Central Railway to Drop Superfast Status of 18 Trains From January 1, 2027

Central Railway will withdraw the superfast status of 18 trains from January 1, 2027, including Deccan Jan Shatabdi, Pragati Express and Tulsi Express. Check the revised train numbers and the reason behind the decision.

Central Railway has decided to withdraw the superfast status of 18 trains operating across its network, including several prominent services such as the Deccan Jan Shatabdi, Pragati Express, Tulsi Express and Mahanagari Express. The trains will operate as regular express services from January 1, 2027, following a review that found their average speeds below the prescribed threshold for superfast classification.

The decision covers nine pairs of trains operating between Mumbai, Pune and several other destinations. Along with the withdrawal of their superfast status, the trains will receive new numbers, which passengers will need to use when booking tickets for journeys from January 1, 2027.

The affected trains include the Mumbai CSMT–Hingoli Deccan Jan Shatabdi, Mumbai CSMT–Pune Pragati Express, Mumbai LTT–Thiruvananthapuram North (Kochuveli) Express, Mumbai LTT–Karmali AC Express, Mumbai CSMT–Banaras Mahanagari Express, Mumbai LTT–Ayodhya Cantt Tulsi Express, Mumbai CSMT–Chennai Egmore Express, Mumbai LTT–Banaras Express and Pune–Kazipet Express.

The Mumbai CSMT–Hingoli Deccan Jan Shatabdi, currently operating under train numbers 12071/12072, will be renumbered 11069/11070 from January 1, 2027. The service runs between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Hingoli.

According to Railway Board rules, a train must maintain an average speed of at least 55 kilometres per hour (kmph) in both the up and down directions over its entire route to retain its superfast classification.

During its review, Central Railway found that the average speeds of all nine pairs of trains were below the prescribed minimum of 55 kmph across their respective routes. As the services did not meet the required speed criteria, the railway administration decided to withdraw their superfast status and operate them as regular express trains.

Central Railway has also instructed all concerned railway stations to inform passengers about the revised train numbers through announcement systems and information boards.

According to the notification, the changes are limited to the trains' classification and numbers. No major changes to their existing timings or fares have been mentioned so far.

Passengers planning to travel on these trains on or after January 1, 2027, have been advised to use the revised train numbers while booking tickets through IRCTC or checking railway enquiry services.

The revised classification and numbering will affect passengers travelling on these 18 trains across multiple routes, making it important to check the updated train details before booking journeys from the start of the new year.
